Do these stories ring true? Judge for yourself after
reading the verbatim report of the trial of Romanian
leaders Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu on December 25,
1989. They were executed the same day.
When that decision was made, says the author, a former
Canadian ambassador to Romania, "half the Romanian
army volunteered to serve in the firing party. That
may be an exaggeration, but not an absurd one. The hatred
for this notorious couple was so intense and so pervasive
in Romania that many normally peaceful people would
gladly have strangled them with their bare hands."
Peter Roberts was also Canadian ambassador to the Soviet
Union, a director of the Canada Council and a press
secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
